P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Dec. 18

PRICES rose around Rs 3 a kg on volume of 9. 26 lakh kg at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auctions here on Friday.

This was the second lowest volume offered for sale in 2005. Exporters lent useful support. Pakistan buyers continued to be forceful. "We picked up medium grades paying up to Rs 42 a kg and the better ones, up to Rs 46," a buyer said.

The buyers for Russia and the other CIS destinations picked up the clean black grades for Rs 36 to 38 a kg.

On the corporate buying front, Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) was less active than in the recent weeks. No other corporate buyer lent useful support. Indcoserve did not buy at all. Western India buyers were active on the brighter liquoring teas.

In all, some 5,000 kgs were sold for over Rs 60 a kg. Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 33 a kg for the plain leaf grades, and Rs 57 to 65 for the bright liquoring grades. In the dust category, the bids ranged Rs 32 to 35 a kg for the plain grades and Rs 58 to 67 for the bright liquoring teas.
