Seeds Nuziveedu targets to sell 25 lakh packets of Bt cotton seeds K.V. Kurmanath
Chevella (Rangareddy district) , Dec. 19 NUZIVEEDU Seeds Ltd, the Secunderabad-based seeds manufacturer, has set a target to market 25 lakh packets of its Bt cotton seeds next year. The company, which launched Bt versions of its cotton hybrid varieties - Bunny and Mallika - early this year, estimates that it might even touch 35 lakh packets, if the royalty component is reduced. Mr K. Venkat Rao, General Manager (Marketing) of the company, said they sold 3.4 lakh packets of Bt varieties this year. He told a team of journalists that visited fields where Bunny Bt seeds were sown that the result was good. He claimed that the number of bolls and quality of cotton were more than that of others. The company had got permission for the commercial release of Bt varieties in Central (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh), and South (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh) zones. Stating that the problem of "loose Bt" (illegal versions of Bt seeds) was rampant, Mr Venkat Rao cautioned the farmers that its use would drastically reduce yields. "Also, it involves additional expenditure. Effectively you are spending more and getting less," he said. The company hoped to sell 20 lakh packets of non-Bt seeds. It sold similar number of packets this year.
