`Netherlands, TN could tie up for economic benefits'

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 19

THE Netherlands will be looking to tie up with Tamil Nadu for economic benefits in the near future, according to Mr Eric Fransiscus Charles Niehe, Ambassador of the Netherlands in India.

Addressing the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), he said sectors such as information and communication technology (ICT), agriculture and food processing and automobile components manufacturing are of interest to Dutch entrepreneurs.

He said IT could be regarded as India's core competency, while logistics and infrastructure could be considered Netherland's area of expertise and that two-way trade in these areas would be beneficial.

The Netherlands is the sixth largest investor in terms of FDI in India, according to Mr Niehe. He said the trade between the two countries, however, was minimal, and this needs to be addressed.

Mr V. Balaraman, President, MCCI, said Chennai's reputation for good healthcare and the Netherlands' expertise in medical technology could lead to good understanding between the two. He said that with high labour costs plaguing the Dutch economy, the growing BPO strength in Chennai could be of interest. He also said the Dutch experience and expertise in handling floods and water damage could be of tremendous use to Chennai, which has been hit by the tsunami and the floods.
