Nagaland Plan outlay at Rs 760 cr

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec 19

THE Annual Plan size of Nagaland for 2006-07 has been pegged at Rs 760 crore, inclusive of one-time special assistance of Rs 50 crore for projects of special priority interest to the State.

The Plan size was decided today at a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Mr Neiphi U. Rio.

Mr Ahluwalia lauded the efforts of the State in bridging the gap between developed and less developed districts through enhanced flow of funds to the less developed districts for infrastructure development.

The creation of a Department of Under-Developed districts by the State has also come in for qualified praise.

Mr Ahluwalia also said that the Commission would have a fresh look at the development strategy for the entire North-Eastern Region.

Mr B.N. Yugandhar, Member, Plan panel, would soon take up the matter with the States of this region for evolving a suitable strategy, he said.

He also said that with the proposed implementation of Bharat Nirman and Backward Region grant fund, Nagaland would have increased flow of resources.

Efforts should be made to ensure effective implementation of these programmes, he said.

Briefing the Commission, the Nagaland Chief Minister said that the State's fiscal position was quite satisfactory as would be revealed by the positive trend in the State's own resources for the next fiscal year after a gap of several years.

He sought the Plan panel's intervention for promotion of micro-financing empowerment of women and efforts to combat flowering of bamboo.

He said that the services sector in the State was being looked at as an exportable one and study of Chinese and South-East Asian languages was being actively encouraged in this border State to prepare for development of trade through this region.
