Calcutta HC dismisses plea on trade fair issue

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata , Dec. 20

JUSTICE Jayanta Kumar Biswas of the Calcutta High Court today dismissed the petition of G.S. Marketing, seeking an order restraining the State Government from holding the International Trade Fair at the city Maidan. While dismissing the petition, the court held that there was no discrimination in granting permission by G.O.C. Eastern Command to the State Government for holding the fair.

G.S. Marketing filed the petition on the ground that permission was given to the State Government in a discriminatory manner, submitting that they held a fair in 2004 at the same venue with success and the turnover of the fair was over Rs 400 crore.

Both G.O.C. Eastern Command and the State Government opposed the petition stating that the State Government has nothing to do with the permission issue. It is the Defence Department under the Ministry, which grants permission.
