Call to adopt execution-oriented approach for quality infrastructure

Bhubaneswar , Dec. 20

THE Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, has underlined the need for adopting an execution-oriented approach to ensure development of quality infrastructure in the country.

Addressing presspersons on the occasion of commencement of the 10th year of operation of Infosys' Bhubaneswar Development Centre, Mr Murthy said that solutions to various problems facing the country were available, but arguments have to be put aside to achieve the goal.

He observed that the country was in need of good roads, airports, hospitals and schools. The elected representatives must take the lead in getting the jobs done.

Infosys was ready to work with the Government for development of any infrastructure, he said.

He also stressed the need for quality teachers in the engineering institutions in the country to produce good talents. During the past 12 months, Infosys received a total of 1.3 million applications, but only 13,500 applicants were selected, he said.

Infosys Bhubaneswar began operations in December 1996 and has grown to over 1,720 employees at present.

The Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, and several other guests graced the occasion.

Mr Murthy said that cities like Bhubaneswar would be the growth engines for the IT Industry in the country. Infosys has taken a lead in this direction by investing more than Rs 135 crore in its Bhubaneswar Development Centre, he informed.

"We contribute approximately 80 per cent of software exports from Orissa, making Infosys the largest exporter from the Bhubaneswar STPI.

"Realising the potential that the city has to offer, we plan to increase our headcount to over 4,500 over the next few years with an added investment of Rs 100 crore," he said.
