Industry chamber FICCI has petitioned the Government for appointing an ombudsman for direct taxes.
The chamber also called for a re-look at the provisions for search and seizures, Centvat rules and service tax for EoUs, among the suggestions for procedural simplification in direct and indirect taxes to reduce litigations, transaction and compliance cost.
"The feedback received by FICCI from its constituents from various sectors both manufacturing and services reveals that industry and trade should be given a free hand by removing the bottlenecks through reviewing the existing taxation procedures," the chamber said in a release here.
It said that chief financial officers and tax experts have underlined the need for a tax ombudsman for direct taxes and for provision to be made in the Income Tax Act on lines of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme for redress of grievances and complaints of assessees against the Revenue Department and its officers, it said.
