`Paper manufacturers must improve quality to survive'

DOMESTIC manufacturers of paper and paper products are set to face fierce competition in the era of foreign trade agreements (FTAs) and regional trade agreements (RTAs), says the Indian Agro & Recycled Paper Mills Association.
The association has suggested that manufactures should devise ways to meet the aspirations of the customers who would now have a choice in terms of quality and cost.
The association's President, Mr Jaydeep Chitlangia, anticipates that paper may move under the FMCG category and conventional selling techniques are bound to fail. Manufacturers and traders are thus required to change their present methods of functioning for their own survival.
Mr Chitlangia feels that manufacturers and traders need to thoroughly investigate, evaluate as well as make assessments whether their organisational approach and policies are consumer oriented and flexible enough to absorb the shocks and vagaries of sudden changes in global trends.
He anticipates that FTAs may result in even larger imports of different categories of paper and paperboard from across the border. The important thing is that the major foreign players enjoy large economies of scale vis-à-vis manufacturing units in India.
He feels that domestic manufacturers of paper need to improve their standard to survive in the FTA regime..
It is pointed out that increasing business activity in the country would boost the demand for cut-size copy and stationery papers.
