Kerala: Many countries keen on recruiting paramedical staff thru State agency

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 21

SEVERAL countries in Europe and West Asia have shown interest in recruiting paramedical staff through the Kerala Government-owned Overseas Development and Employment Promotion Consultants Ltd (ODEPC).

Announcing this at a press conference in the city today, the Kerala Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, said the authorities in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman are looking at using ODEPC to recruit nurses and other paramedical staff from Kerala.

In fact, a delegation from Kuwait has already had discussions with ODEPC about the possibility of recruiting nurses from Kerala, he added. Meanwhile, the company has helped Saudi Arabia's health ministry recruit around 600 nurses from Kerala, he pointed out.

Over the past three-four years, ODEPC has worked very hard to build links with countries in Europe and also in West Asia, the Minister said. The company is now accepted as a professional and legitimate recruitment services provider by the authorities in these countries, he added.

These initiatives have helped the company earn a profit of Rs 51.06 lakh in the last financial year, Mr Divakaran explained. In fact, for the first time, the company has also paid a dividend of Rs 10.53 lakh to the State Government for 2004-05, he added.

With the demand for paramedical staff growing substantially, the company expects to facilitate more recruitments in this area, he said. However, Kerala will have to improve the quality of its educational programmes for paramedical staff if the State is to benefit from the growing demand for paramedical personnel, he added.
