Letters Kerala tea party
This refers to the report "Don't press for a wage hike, APK tells workers" (Business Line, December 20). The suggestion of the Association of Planters of Kerala appears to be reasonable. Is it not better than closing down? The tea industry in the South, especially in Kerala, has been facing problems for many years. It is sad that 37 plantations have been closed down. How long will the workers live on doles? Without leaving it to fate, efforts should be made to revive these plantations by diversification of crops or otherwise. The Centre should come up with specific plans for revival including revision of taxes and tariffs. In Eastern India, tea estates are being made into attractive tourist destinations. This could also be considered in the south. Further, the upcoming global tea forum to be held in Dubai can be taken advantage of. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvaanthapuram
