THE annual Plan size for Uttar Pradesh for the next fiscal (2006-07) has been fixed at Rs 19,000 crore inclusive of one-time additional Central assistance of Rs 250 crore for projects of special importance to the State.

At a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the State Chief Minister, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, it was agreed that the next fiscal year's Plan component would also include Rs 500 crore in the National Urban Renewal Programme for which the State would have to enter into an MoU with the Central Government.

Lauding the State on tax revenue efforts, particularly the 30.1 per cent increase registered in trade tax, the Deputy Chairman of the Plan panel also appreciated the efforts in accelerating the development process and improving fiscal health.

The Planning Commission suggested that the State Government should work out a comprehensive and concrete action plan for ensuring implementation of guidelines related to the IT sector. The State was asked to present separately its case for power sector so as to have a detailed view on problems plaguing reforms in the State.

Briefing the Commission on the performance of his State, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, said that focussed attention was being given to power, road, irrigation, health, education and employment sectors. Mr Yadav also recounted the various development programmes, both physical and social infrastructure, his Government was undertaking and sought the continued support of the Union Government through enhanced Plan assistance.
