Lepakshi bids to tap NRI market

LEPAKSHI, the flagship brand of AP Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, is planning to tap the NRI population worldwide.The corporation is gearing up to make Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, scheduled to be held during January 7-9, 2006, a platform to sell the idea. "The event is likely to attract NRIs from 80 countries. This is the right place to showcase our products," Mr B. Jayaraj, Managing Director of the Corporation, said.

The corporation will put up its products at the all-India crafts bazaar, which is being held to coincide with the NRI fete. "We have participated in trade fairs in Russia, the US, the UK, Singapore, Spain, Japan and Dubai. The response has been good. There is a lot of demand for our handicrafts," he said.

Addressing newspersons after the inaugural of the 12-day crafts bazaar opened at Sanjeevareddy Nagar Community Hall here on Thursday, he said the corporation was in the final stages of talks with some NRI groups in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. A draft MoU (memorandum of understanding) had been circulated. The deals are likely to be finalised early next year, after getting the legal clearances in the countries. He said the corporation would specifically focus on products such as crochet laces, Kalamkari block prints, cotton durries and Pochampally designs.

The corporation, which registered a turnover of Rs 36 crore in 2004-05, is targeting Rs 40 crore this fiscal.

Exports contributed Rs 1 crore during 2004-05 as against Rs 75 lakh in the previous year.
