Amaravati gets ready for `Kalachakra'

ARRANGEMENTS are in full swing for the 12-day Kalachakra, the global Buddhist congregation that will begin at Amaravati in Guntur district on January 5.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr K. Rosaiah, Minister for Finance and Health, said issues related to infrastructure, transport and security were being taken care by the Government.

As many as 1.30 lakh Buddhists from all over the world were expected to take part in the event.

The last four days of the event were expected to draw more monks.

The Government was spending Rs 53 crore in making the arrangements.

Special trains would be run from major cities.

The Dalai Lama, the Buddhist spiritual leader, would arrive in Hyderabad on January 2, before proceeding to the popular Buddhist site of Amaravati. He would also visit Nagarjuna Konda.

Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, and his Cabinet colleagues would join the lama on January 10 to attend a lecture on the teachings of Acharya Nagarjuna.

The police have been taking special security measures keeping in mind the threats to the life of the Buddhist leader.
