Tea Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Nilgiris tea estates hit by frost P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Dec. 23 ABOUT 250 hectares of tea in various parts of the Nilgiris have been hit by frost since last month. According to the Nilgiris Regional Centre of the UPASI Tea Research Foundation, the intensity varied from estate to estate. With the temperature nose-diving, many such tea estates suffered the frost damage. The Centre said there was only 3.7 hours of sunshine per day last month. Extreme weather conditions were experienced with rains for some days and frost on other days. The present low temperature has brought in frost conditions in low lying pockets of Kil Kotagiri, Kotagiri, Naduvattam and Kundha tea belts. "Should the frost bite become severe, the overall production would suffer," Mr T. Rangaiah, President of the Nilgiris Small Tea Growers' Association, told Business Line. The Tea Research Foundation has cautioned the planters against the incidence of blister blight and red spider mite infestation in the plantations which could reduce the crop prospects.
