Panel set up to study futures for potato, onion

New Delhi , Dec. 23

THE Government has formed a committee to study whether futures trading of essentials such as onions and potatoes should be allowed to remove price volatility witnessed by these widely traded commodities.

"We are studying the option of allowing commodities like onion and potato at the futures trading platform to bring in price stability in these essential items in the market," the Consumer Affairs Secretary, Mr L. Mansingh, said. Futures trading on these commodities would help removing frequent short-run price fluctuations often caused due to artificial scarcity, he added.

A sub-committee has been recently constituted to study the issue and make recommendations.
