Agricultural Institutions Campco to maximise use of cocoa-crushing facility Our Bureau
Mangalore , Dec. 25 THE new board of directors of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd plans to make maximum use of cocoa-crushing facility at its chocolate-manufacturing unit at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district. In this regard, it is entering into agreements with private companies for crushing their cocoa beans at the factory. Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, who was elected President of the co-operative here on Saturday, told presspersons that the factory has a capacity to crush 8,000 tonnes of cocoa beans a year. However, the facility is not being used to the maximum level. Considering this, Campco is planning to take job works from private companies. The cooperative can earn some `commitment charges' through such job works. It has already entered into an agreement with a Jindal company to crush 500 tonnes of cocoa beans. Around 100 tonnes of beans have already arrived at the factory, he said. Apart from this, some of the companies have sent their proposals to award cocoa-crushing activity to the co-operative. He said that Campco earned a `commitment charge' of Rs 1.53 crore last year by manufacturing some products for Cadburys and Nestle. Stating that the co-operative suffered a loss of Rs 1.40 crore at its chocolate manufacturing unit during the current fiscal, he said the new agreements should help in bringing down loss. Mr Rangamurthy said that the arecanut marketing unit made a profit of Rs 9.50 crore till November 30 in the current fiscal.
