Rural banking

This refers to the article "State Bank launches `no frill' account for villagers" (Business Line, December 22). The move is welcome, as it will give increased access to banking services especially in villages. But the question is how to make it reach the interiors of the country.

The cost must also to be considered.

SBI plans to enlist the help of local residents, SHGs, etc, with an SBI Mitra scheme. The Postal Department is trying to develop the banking sector. Why can SBI not have an arrangement with the Postal Department for the benefit of both? It could reduce cost, ensure better control and give increased access.
