Viruses More viruses this year Our Bureau
In the last three months, the number of infections in Asia (estimated at over 5 million) has more than doubled compared to the period between April - June or January - March 2005. New network virus `Zotob', which exploited Microsoft OS vulnerability, hit headlines worldwide in mid-August, after disrupting networks of CNN, ABC and New York Times, because of un-atched computers. Phishing and spyware have also been on the rise. According to Trend Micro sources, mobile virus hitting smart phones users has been growing in the dark. As many as 14 mobile viruses have been tracked this year as compared to 6 last year. SYMBOS_QDIAL.A has, since its appearance in August 2004, claimed 1,155 victims in Asia. Though the number looks small, Trend Micro has not ruled out a rise in such threats as virus writers, the company reiterates, ` never stop developing and enhancing their evil wares.'
