New Delhi , Dec 25

DURIAN Industries Ltd is setting up a laminates production unit at Ahmedabad with an investment of Rs 25 crore. The facility will start production by the middle of next month and the company will start marketing the laminates by February next year.

Initially, the production capacity of the unit would be 280,000 sq m a month, which the company hopes to double by the middle of next year. The company is funding 35 per cent of the investment through internal accruals and the rest through loan from SBI, said Mr Manohar Jhunjhunwala, Director (Marketing).

The company will first tap the domestic market for the product and then concentrate on the export market.

"We will be able to export the product by April next year. We are looking at the US, the European and the Middle and Far East markets for exports," said Mr Jhunjhunwala.

According to an industry estimate, the laminates market in the country is worth about Rs 2,000 crore a year. The company hopes to acquire 25 per cent of the market share in the next 2-3 years.

This would be the third manufacturing plant of the company, the other two being plywood manufacturing plants based at Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

With the setting up of the new laminates plant, the company targets a turnover of Rs 150 crore for the next fiscal.

Furniture currently accounts for over 50 per cent of the company's turnover.

Other products of the company include veneers and moulded and flush doors.
