`Upgrade Mangalore airport'

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The United Associations of Karnataka Kuwait (UAKK), a forum of 14 associations working for the welfare of the people of Karnataka residing in West Asia, has urged the Union Civil Aviation Minister to upgrade Mangalore airport to international status.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr P.B. Pinto, Coordinator (Government Affairs), UAKK, said the Government should take steps to operate direct flights to West Asia from Mangalore airport. UAKK has sent a letter to the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, in this regard.

To operate international flights, it is essential for the Government to set up customs and emigration counter at the airport. The Centre could think of opening a lounge for this purpose at the airport, he said.

Large aircraft could be landed at the new runway, which is expected to be completed soon.

Mr Pinto said that the upgradation of Mangalore airport to international status would eliminate the hardships faced by non-resident Indians from coastal Karnataka.

Stating that many people from coastal Karnataka work in West Asia, he said a direct flight to the region would help them save time and money.
