New Projects Agri-Biz & Commodities - Seeds Syngenta plans radiochemistry lab in West Bengal Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 26 SYNGENTA of Switzerland, a global leader in agribusiness and a company that is committed to sustainable agriculture through innovative research and technology, is likely to set up a radiochemistry laboratory in West Bengal. A feasibility study in this regard, initiated by the company jointly with the Kolkata-based Chemgen Pharma International, is currently underway. The Basel-headquartered Syngenta is a global leader in crop protection and ranks third in the high-value commercial seeds market. It is also a global leader in radioisotope products and medicinal chemistry. The company clocked a global turnover of $7.3 billion in 2004. Mr J. Chatterjee, President of The Overseas Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry, told presspersons here on Monday that the feasibility report would be ready by the end of January and the first phase of the proposed project is expected to be operational by the end of 2006. The radiochemistry laboratory, Syngenta's first such initiative "outside the first world", would be engaged in research in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Mr Chatterjee expressed his inability to provide further details of the project, including the likely headcount in the laboratory. He said the laboratory could be located outside Kolkata "since it would deal with radiochemistry and, as such, security as well as environmental concerns have to be kept in mind while deciding upon the location of such a high-tech R&D laboratory".
