TN Chamber seeks early implementation of value-added tax

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Dec. 27

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the State Government to opt for implementation of value-added tax (VAT) either from January 1 or at least from April 1 and prevent the exodus of trade and industry to other States.

In a statement here, the chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, drawing attention to the announcement of the five BJP-ruled States to implement VAT in their respective States, has pointed out that Tamil Nadu remained isolated in this regard and non-implementation has severely affected trade and industry in the State. The manufacturing activities and employment opportunities have been the worse hit, he said.

With the Central Sales Tax rate scheduled to be brought down from 4 per cent to 2 per cent in VAT-implemented States from April 1, if the rate remained at 4 per cent in the State, inter-state sales would come to a grinding halt, he has further pointed out.
