Tea Frost hits Nilgiris tea crop P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Dec 29 WITH the frost hitting the low-lying areas, extensive damage to the tea crop and the plant has been reported by the small growers from the various tea growing pockets of the Nilgiris. "Wednesday's frost has eaten out almost 25 per cent of the field. Considering the frost of last month, in all, we have lost nearly 50 per cent of the crop. "The tea leaves have been charred. The growth has been stunted with the leaves turning inward. The juice content in the leaves has come down", Mr G. Stephen Jayaseelan, a small grower from Wellington area told Business Lineon Thursday. A tea scientist from the UPASI Tea Research Foundation (TRF) said the temperature had drifted to historic lows in many parts of the Nilgiris. Thalakundah, Emerald, Avalanche, Najanaad, Naduvattam, Kil Kotagiri and Kundah tea belts have reported frost damage.
