New Delhi , Dec. 29

THE Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal for declaring the existing domestic airport in Jaipur into an international airport.

The decision to make Jaipur an international airport was announced by the then Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, while presenting the interim budget for 2004-05.

The airport belongs to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and is among the 12 airports where passenger friendly facilities have been upgraded and modernised.

The airport has seen Indian Airlines operate flights to Dubai and Bangkok since 2002.

There has been a long-term plan to undertake construction of a new international terminal building which can handle 1,000 passengers an hour at Jaipur and to extend the runway length to accommodate a large aircraft.

The decision to make Jaipur an international airport is likely to see more international and chartered flights operate through Jaipur.

Besides, the decision will provide improved connectivity, wider choice of services at competitive cost to the air traveller, official sources said.

Currently, there are more than 10 international airports in the country including those at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Goa and Ahmedabad.
