Kerala's promise to Campco

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The Kerala Minister for Cooperation, Mr M.V. Raghavan, has promised the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd that the subsidy amount of Rs 54.60 lakh — which is due from the Kerala Government to the cooperative - will be released soon.

A press release said here that Mr Raghavan visited Campco's head office in Mangalore on Friday.

Though Campco purchased arecanut during 2004-05 under the subsidy scheme of the Kerala Government, an amount of Rs 54.60 lakh was due to the cooperative. Campco was the nodal agency for purchasing arecanut under the subsidy scheme of the Kerala Government.

Welcoming the Minister, the Campco President, Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, said that the Kerala Government should introduce the subsidy scheme during the harvesting period in January. This will help the growers with small holdings and stabilise the market, he said.

Urging the Kerala Government to take steps to prevent the import of inferior quality arecanut through Kochi Port, he said the Government should pressure the Centre to ban such imports.
