Banking on accounts

On approaching SBI for a senior citizens deposit account, whose proceeds were to be credited at another branch, I was surprised to find that I would first have to open a savings account at the latter branch too.

This seems like such a short-circuiting the core banking concept of facilitating customers to transact business at any of the bank's branches.
