ChPT may open bids for box terminal soon

THE financial bids for the second container terminal at Chennai port are likely to be opened in the third week of this month.

The Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) is waiting for a final clearance to be given to Hutchison Port Holdings, one of the bidders for the terminal, by the Centre, according a senior port trust official.

The cost of the project would be Rs 491.76 crore, with ChPT contributing around Rs 100 crore and the remaining amount to be brought in by the build-own-and-transfer operator.

Three consortium bidders — Port of Singapore Authority/ Sical, Emirates Trading Agency/ Gammon India and Hutchison/ Larsen & Toubro are bidding for the terminal, which would be an alternative to the existing private container terminal operated by Chennai Container Terminal Ltd of P&O Ports, UK.
