Kerala road safety authority

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level meeting chaired by the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has decided to set up a road safety authority in the State soon.

The State Cabinet had given its nod to a Bill for constituting the body as early as in June this year, but the Assembly has not been able to pass it.

The Bill approved by the Cabinet earlier had stipulated the formation of a Road Safety Fund using a one-time cess on vehicles. The Kerala Road Safety Authority will administer the fund and coordinate the activities of various departments to bring down road accidents and open trauma care centres in places where such facilities do not exist at present.

The authority will have the Transport Minister as its Chairman and the Minister for Public Works as Vice-Chairman.
