Marginal rise in rubber prices

PHYSICAL rubber prices firmed up marginally on the first trading day of the New Year.

Covering groups were buyers in selected grades but they preferred to keep a low profile.

Sheet rubber RSS 4 improved 25 paise at Kottayam to Rs 71 a kg on Saturday.

Last week, rubber prices topped Rs 72 a kg but declined subsequently as growers, in need of liquid cash, began selling their stocks.

The grade was steady at Rs 71 a kg at Kochi.

The trend remained mixed, as ISNR 20 and latex were steady while the transactions were dull.

The rubber futures turned weak in NMCE possibly lacking guidance as the international markets were on holidays.

The January contract was traded at Rs 71.85 (Rs 71.95), February at Rs 73.85 (Rs 74.05) March at Rs 75.01 (Rs 75.01) and April contract at Rs 76.20 (Rs 76.33 ) per kg for RSS 4.

Volumes were low at 596 lots - 214 lots in January, 235 lots in February, 128 lots in March and 19 lots in April till noon.

The January contract for RSS 4 was quoted at Rs 71 (Rs 71.55) and February at Rs 73.15 (Rs 73.25) a kg on MCX.

Spot prices a kg were: RSS 4 Rs 71 (Rs 70.75); RSS-5 Rs 69.25 (Rs 69); ungraded Rs 67 (Rs 66.75); ISNR 20 Rs 68.50 (Rs 68.50); and latex 60% Rs 50 (Rs 50
