PM stresses need to bridge urban-rural divide

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan 2

THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today said that growth alone was not the sufficient condition for alleviating poverty, since the divide between urban and rural India has to be bridged, which calls for large-scale investments in rural India and creation of human resource base.

He was speaking with a batch of students from Colombia, Wharton, and Stanford Universities.

Dr Singh said that the country's future lay in integrating its economy with the global economy.

Stating that the process of economic liberalisation was going on well, he said that tariff rates had come down drastically. The Indian economy has become much more open and there is a new creativity among Indian entrepreneurs.

He also stressed the creation of environmentally sustainable growth process, saying that it would absorb surplus manpower.
