General Insurance An insurance cover for tomb Our Bureau
Kochi , Jan. 3 EVEN the dead can now hope to get an insurance cover, provided the living are willing to pay premium. Perhaps for the first time in the country, United India Insurance has provided an insurance cover to a tomb in a cemetery at Aluva, near here. The tomb of Karuvely family at Aluva St Dominic church has been insured for Rs 1 lakh for a year, said V.R. Ramachandran, Divisional Manager of United India. "First I thought it was a joke. But when the person insisted, I sought special permission from the higher authorities to provide the cover," Ramachandran said. The insurance was offered in December last. The premium for the cover is Rs 550 a year. The 14-year-old tomb has been insured against vandalism, damages due to floods, earthquake, heavy rains, explosion, fire, landslide, lightning and even terrorist attack. A family member said the tomb was insured because some disputes about its height had cropped up recently, and the family feared of vandalism. He said Karuvely family had insured all their assets, including the front door of their house. "We spend around Rs 15,000 every year on premium," he said. "They are an `insurance-minded' family, said Dinesh, the agent who had facilitated this cover.
