Telecommunications Info-Tech - Telecommunications One million more BSNL mobile subscribers in Dec Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan 4 BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd today announced it had added one million new mobile subscribers in December, taking the total to over 14 million. BSNL is the second operator to report a million new additions after Reliance Infocomm. Riding on low tariffs and lifetime validity pre-paid card offers, cellular operators are expected to report unprecedented growth for December. Official overall numbers will be released by the industry in the next few days. This is the first time BSNL has added so many new subscribers ever since it launched cellular services two years ago. More than 4.77 lakh connections have been provided in South Zone, which comprises more than 2 lakh connections in Kerala, 1.25 lakh connections in Tamil Nadu and 75,000 connections each in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The waiting list for cellular connections in South Zone has been cleared and connections are now available `on demand'. In North Zone also, 2.58 lakh connections were released during December 2005. More than 1.2 lakh connections have been provided in Uttar Pradesh and around one lakh in Rajasthan. In North Zone also, mobile connections are available `on demand'. It was earlier reported that BSNL's waiting list for cellular connection was almost as high as the list for fixed line telephones. In East Zone, 2.68 lakh connections have been provided during the month, of which one lakh connections have been given in West Bengal and 62,000 in Bihar. In North Eastern states, BSNL's market share is about 70 per cent. In East Zone, availability of mobile connections `on demand' is expected by the month end, said a press release.
