BSNL, MTNL employees to strike work today

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Jan. 4

ABOUT 4.5 lakh employees of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) will strike work on Thursday, focussing attention on their demands that include opposition to foreign direct investment (FDI), and granting Navaratna status and autonomy to BSNL.

Addressing a press conference, the Secretary, BSNL Employees' Union, Hyderabad Telecom District, Mr D. Nagamaniam said that BSNL had enough resources and did not need the proposed increase in FDI from 49 to 74 per cent. BSNL has consistently registered profits over the years and hence there was no need for any external assistance.

Their demands include expansion of mobile and broadband services, absorption of group `A'/ITS officers in BSNL and refusal to share BSNL infrastructure with private operators.
