Foreign Trade India, Japan agree to consider economic pact Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan 4 INDIA and Japan have agreed to "earnestly consider" the possibility of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement in the context of the ongoing work of the India-Japan joint study group. The group is expected to submit its report by June this year. A statement issued at the conclusion of a two-day visit of the Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr Taro Aso, said that India will remain the largest recipient of Japanese Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) during the current fiscal. This will be the third successive year that India will be the largest recipient of Japanese ODA. Japan provided about Rs 5,600-crore yen loan to India in 2004, which was an increase of 7.5 per cent of the amount provided in the previous year. During the talks, the two sides agreed to step up co-operation in the energy sector, including timely implementation of the Plan of Action agreed between the Minister for Natural Gas and the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry. The Japanese side also conveyed its decision to launch the `Aso programme' that will involve exchange of 4,000 persons over the next three years in diverse fields including Japanese language, technology, and youth interaction, among others. The two sides also agreed to hold joint workshops to identify collaboration projects to be undertaken as part of the science and technology initiatives announced by the Prime Ministers of the two countries in April last year.
