Delhi-Mumbai rail corridor: Minor Gujarat ports likely to benefit

PORTS along the coast of Gujarat may have good news in store. The Delhi-Mumbai leg of the dedicated rail freight corridor is likely to be built in a manner so that the minor ports along the Gujarat coast can be served as well.

If the rail freight corridor is built in a manner that the Gujarat ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav, Bedi, Porbandar, and Dholera, among others, are connected through short feeder routes, the economic viability of the corridor as well as the minor ports would increase.

"Probability of the track being built through Ajmer is high," said Mr Batra, though a final decision is yet to be arrived at. The corridor on the Delhi-Howrah section is likely to run parallel to the current trunk route, he said.

Apart from increase in economic viability, while the current route via Kota and Ratlam passes through urban centres, the suggested route through Palanpur covers relatively rural areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. This would result in relatively cheaper land acquisition.

"The inputs of Railway Board would have a major bearing on the final outcome of recommendation of RITES in the final report," said an official from RITES.
