CAIT releases report card on VAT regime

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 6

THE Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) has released a report card on nine months of State-level value-added tax (VAT) regime, outlining some of the concerns of trade over the new tax system.

One of the main concerns highlighted in the report card is the absence of a roadmap for the phase-out of central sales tax (CST) Act. CAIT is of the view that CST should be abolished, as both VAT and CST cannot co-exist.

CAIT said the tax burden in the VAT regime has increased and the prices in general have gone up. The report card further said that States representing more than 51 per cent of Indian population have not yet implemented State-level VAT.
