Terumo Penpol unveils blood bags with safety features

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 6

SURGICALS major Terumo Penpol has introduced blood bags with safety features that assure protection from blood-borne diseases.

A company spokesperson said here that the new blood bags are equipped with a needle injury protector. Accidental needle stick injuries are common during collection, and can transmit HIV, Hepatitis B/C and other dangerous blood-borne afflictions.

Using safety blood bags with needle injury protector as an aid, it is now possible to reduce the potential of needle stick injury to blood bank staff. They provide complete safety to recipients of blood as well. Transfusion associated bacterial sepsis represents the most common cause of death from infectious diseases.

The Terumo Penpol pre-donation bag is another new product, which helps reduce the risk of bacterial contamination of blood. When blood is collected, the dirt and skin particles on the surface flow into the blood causing contamination.

Pre-donation sampling bag enables diversion and collection of the first 25-30 ml of blood that usually contains skin particles, bacteria and dust particles. The remaining blood free from impurities can be collected in the primary bag. The risk of bacterial contamination can be minimised by making use of this product.

Terumo Penpol is a leading manufacturer of blood collection bags and boasts an installed capacity of 10 million bags per annum. The bags are tested against parameters set out in ISO- 3826, which provides for products that ensure safety of blood and blood components. They also offer resistance to breakage in centrifuge, among other parameters. The blood bags are sold in over 42 countries across the world.

The blood collection range includes five types of blood bags catering to various patient needs: single, double, triple, quadruple and penta blood bags.

Two options of anticoagulant solutions, CPD (Citrate Phosphate Dextrose) and CPDA-1 (CPD-Adenine), are available.

CPD is the solution used for non-clotting of the blood collected in the bag. The storage period of the blood collected in CPD bag is 21 days.

With CPDA-1, the blood can be stored for an additional seven days.
