THE Magsasay award winner Mr Rajendra Singh of Rajasthan has stressed the need for creating awareness about water conservation among youths.
Delivering the keynote address at the 26th annual Kissan Mela at Koteshwara in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on Friday, Mr Singh said that the youths of the country should be educated about the need for water conservation. The government agencies and voluntary organisations should make efforts to propagate water conservation activities.
Citing the instance of water scarcity in Rajasthan during the eighties, he said the people's initiatives helped in carrying out water conservation activities in the State.
Organised by the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), the three-day mela was inaugurated on Friday.
Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman of SKDRDP, who presided over the function, said that Kissan Melas are held every year to encourage small farmers.
Some small farmers find it difficult to raise a single crop in a year.
Urging the Government to encourage small farmers to carry out farming activities, he said they should be provided with modern agriculture technologies.
He said that the SKDRDP, which has 58,000 farmers as its members, wants to cover one-lakh farmers in due course of time.
