Our Bureau

Mangalore , Jan. 8

DAKSHINA Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union has decided to increase the procurement price of milk by 25 paise a litre from January 11.

Addressing presspersons here, the President of the union, Mr B. Niranjana, said that there would be no increase in the selling price of milk.

The board of the union has taken a decision to increase the procurement price of milk to boost production in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. From January 11 to March 31, farmers will get Rs 10.75 for a litre of milk they sell to the cooperative societies. Average procurement price is Rs 8.46 a litre in the State and Rs 8.43 in the country.

Of the 176 milk federations in the country, only four federations pay the highest price to the farmers. Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union is one among them, he said.

The union has been facing a shortage of around 12,000 litres of milk daily. He said that 496 milk cooperative societies in these two districts procure 1.78 lakh litres of milk every day. However, ona daily basis, the union is selling 1.89 lakh litres of milk and other related products. The proposed increase in the procurement price of milk will boost production in the region, he said.

Asked if the customers will be forced to pay more for the milk they purchase, he said the union would not hike the prices for its customers.

Expansion

The union has planned expansion of its processing capacities at Mangalore and Manipal units.

Dr Venkatram, Managing Director of the union, said that the Mangalore unit could process one-lakh litres of milk a day. It wants to increase the capacity to two lakh litres at a cost of Rs 4.65 crore. The capacity expansion at Mangalore unit will be completed by 10 months. The processing capacity of the Manipal unit will be increased from 60,000 litres a day to one-lakh litres a day.

New products

By the end of March, the union would set up a plant to produce flavoured milk. Currently, the union is marketing the flavoured milk of other districts. The new plant can produce 5,000 bottles of flavoured milk in an hour. The union is also planning to set up an ice-cream manufacturing unit in Mangalore, he said.

Fodder cultivation

The union, in association with Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, has taken up a fodder cultivation programme in these districts. Nearly 10,000 farmers have taken up fodder cultivation under the programme, Dr Venkatram added.
