Hyderabad , Jan. 8 THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has sought the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh's help for early clearance for the pending irrigation projects, including the ambitious multi-crore Polavaram project. In an interaction with the Prime Minister on Saturday, the Chief Minister explained the Government has taken up over 30 major and medium irrigation projects with investment of more than Rs 60,000 crore and early clearances would ensure that the projects are taken up and completed. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office, the State's goal is to irrigate 72 lakh acres in the next three years, while the UPA Government has set for itself a target to bring around 2.5 crore acres across the country under irrigation. The Chief Minister explained about Rs 22,000 crore would be required for implementation of Indiramma, that is aimed at changing the lives of the people both in rural and urban areas. While the State Government constructed 13 lakh houses during the last 18 months under the weaker section housing programme, the target is to construct about 16 lakh houses for weaker sections during 2006-07 under Indiramma scheme.
