Kingfisher not interested in buying Sahara Airlines, says Mallya

Mumbai , Jan 8

THE Chairman of Kingfisher Airlines, Mr Vijay Mallya, has said he was not interested in buying up Sahara Airlines.

Speaking to newspersons at the launch of the Kingfisher Calendar 2006, he said Kingfisher Airlines was expanding rapidly and he would like to focus on its growth.

Earlier, United Breweries, the holding company of Kingfisher Airlines, had bid for Sahara Airlines. However, this fell short of Ernst & Young's valuation of Sahara Airlines at between $750 million and $1 billion. E&Y was appointed by Sahara Airlines to value it.

`Jet may buy Sahara': Mr Mallya added that the Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways may buy up Sahara.

Meanwhile, intensifying its efforts to attract more corporate customers, Kingfisher Airlines is planning on offering First Class seats. The airline currently has a single configuration of seating called the Kingfisher Class.

According to Mr Nigel Harwood, Chief Operating Officer, Kingfisher Airlines, the first class seats would be introduced on the trunk routes alone. The airline was in the process of retro-fitting between four and five aircraft with first class seating for the purpose. He added that the airline was recording loads of about 70 per cent currently.

Queried about the airline's offer to draw frequent flyers from Jet Airways, he said the initiative was doing well.

Calendar: Kingfisher Swimsuit Special Australia 2006, the fourth edition of the annual swimsuit calendar, was launched by actor, Saif Ali Khan. It was shot in Australia and features six new models - Deepika Padukone, Karishma Kotak, Mashoom Singha, Neelam Chauhan, Shilpa Reddy and Shruti Agarwal.
