Indian Railways

This is with reference to the article, "Railways: A derailed social service", (Business Line, January 6). A few observations:

  • The railways staff is 2.5 times less efficient than their counterparts abroad. Therefore, the railways shedding flab was an improvement.

  • The fares for the AC Class have not been hiked for long. The Railways is certainly not doing a service to the AC class passengers by not raising the fares; rather it is trying to retain a class of passengers that it does not need to subsidise.

  • If any body is being subsidised, it is the rail employees.
  • The number of trains having first-class coaches is probably less than 10 per cent. It is the least preferred service, as it is priced closely to an airline. It is, however, correct to say that the Railways is a derailed social service.

    Jai Mrug
