Health insurance

This refers to `New cover: Free medicines for BPL families on the anvil' (Business Line, January 8). It is a good move from the social security angle but, before finalisation, the scheme should consider the various loopholes that could result in its misuse with the connivance of unscrupulous entities in the health sector, including drug stores. The Government should initiate proper steps for addressing the needs of the poorer sections, particularly in the backdrop of mounting costs in clinics and hospitals.

The IRDA should bring in novel schemes in the mediclaim sector, which has some in-built problems. The reported disinterest shown by the general insurance companies in promoting mediclaim policies in the present form should be subjected to meaningful studies without finding fault with the companies.
