Minister assures GOPIO members to cut red tape

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Jan. 10

THE assurances given by Mr Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, were music to the ears of GOPIO (Global Organisation of Persons of Indian Origin) members.

To make it doubly sure, the Minister sprang a surprise by playing his mouth organ, making the audience clap in chorus with the number.

Mr Fernandes tried to assuage the feelings of the leaders of GOPIO, who were generally piqued at the indifferent attitude of some bureaucrats, at the fourth annual `PIOs Dialogue with India' held here on Tuesday.

The conference was held in consonance with the just-concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The GOPIO comprises members or PIOs from across the globe.

In his inaugural comments, Mr Mahen Utchanah, President of GOPIO International, said though the members were happy about the dual citizenship, they were not so with the way the bureaucrats handled them.

He appealed to the Minister to give PIOs a dedicated university.

Reacting to Mr Mahen's comments, Mr Fernandes admitted to the fact that things at the Ministry had slowed down. "Whatever speed we have lost, I assure you that we will make up in due course," he said.
