The Hindu Business Line : Quality education

This is with reference to, "Unemployment, inflation, education," (Business Line, January 9). The author is saying things that are contra-style in the present day political context, where quantity matters most. But he is justified in raising the issue of quality of `products', especially in the area of education.

He has clearly explained the wider implications and long-term consequences of poor quality education on the economy and society as a whole. His suggestion to introduce an element of competition in the field of education by rewarding those institutions that perform better than an accepted quality benchmark is a smart one.

Competition brings out the best in us. That instrument is very valid to the colleges as well. Quality performance should become the mantra of the day.

By the same token, quality performance must be appropriately rewarded. India's competitiveness in a global economy depends very much on the superior talents and skills of its educated youth.
