New Projects Industry & Economy - Events GM plant for Daewoo range of cars soon Sudha Menon
Pune , Jan. 12 GENERAL Motors India is setting up a greenfield plant to manufacture a range of vehicles from the GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company's (GMDA&TC) global portfolio. Top company sources told Business Line that the company is close to finalising the location of the new plant, which will also serve as an export hub for the region, and is expected to make an announcement about its plans in the near future. Sources also said the company is going ahead with the launch of the former Daewoo's small car, Matiz, as a precursor to setting up independent facilities for cars from the new entity GMDA&TC. According to information, a team has been set up to shortlist potential cars from GMDA&TC's range which can be manufactured in India once the new plant, with an estimated 2 lakh units capacity, is operational. "The new plant will also be used to export to countries in the region," sources said. The new Matiz, meanwhile, will be manufactured at GMI's Halol facility beginning early next year and will sport the Chevrolet badge. "We are working out specifications to realign the car with the market's current requirements," sources said, adding the car is likely to roll in with 1 litre and 1.2 litre engine versions. Matiz production will be shifted to the new facility when it goes on stream, sources said.
