Voting rights for NRIs

It cannot be denied that NRIs deserve the country's gratitude for many things, primarily for investing their surplus at home, thereby boosting forex reserves.

However, it is not a wise idea to grant them voting rights. The Prime Minister has said that NRIs from Saudi Arabia and West Asia would be the first to get those rights.

Further, what is the idea of allowing NRIs who may not be aware about the local candidates in their constituency?

It is one thing to grant them privileges of a PIO card, Overseas Citizenship Card, high rate of interest on their investments on IMD, exemption of income tax but quite another to allow them voting rights.
