Global Pipe offers tech to modernise sewage systems

Our Bureau

Chennai , Jan. 12

A CLUTCH of companies in Europe, US and India have together promoted Global Pipe Engineering & System (India) Ltd to offer technology and products for waste water systems in India.

Global Pipe will scout for partners in India to manufacture the products here and also lobby with government agencies and the private sector to use their modern products and technology. The company also has access to micro tunnelling technology that can be used to lay pipelines without digging trenches.

The promoters of Global Pipe include DIS enbi seals Ireland Ltd, Flex-Coupling Ltd, UK, which is part of Fermco, US, and Mysore Stoneware Pipes & Potteries Ltd, Bangalore.

Keramo Steinzeug N.V., Germany, manufacturers of vitrified clay pipes and experts in micro tunnelling, are also associated with the project.

Mr Ir A.F.L. Hendrickx, Director, Global Pipe, and the Managing Director of DIS enbi, said that in the World Bank's estimate over 1,810 towns need better sewage systems in India and it would fund only if the quality is correct.

India would need over 6.5 lakh tonnes of clay pipes a year for the next 10 years and taking into account the need for repairing and replacing existing ones it would work out to about 2 million tonnes a year.

The companies are looking for partners here to manufacture the components, including pipes, at international quality standards. In a presentation to the industry here, Flex-Seal's International Sales Director, Mr Dan Penney, said that they plan to sell the technology to upgrade the drainage systems and sewers here. The companies are talking to the Central and State governments to increase awareness of the potential.

According to Mr Penney, of the 300 types of couplings and joining products that they sell, over 14 would handle most of the problems of leakage that plague the systems here. They are designed to last 100 years and will connect a wide range of pipes whether stone, cast iron, PVC or HDPE. A novel product that can repair leakages without the need to dig them up is also available.
