Announcements Microsoft develops digital map of India Our Bureau
Bangalore , Jan 12 MICROSOFT Research India revealed a prototype of a digital map of India called Visual India, which will be made available in a day or two. The company collaborated with the Survey of India, part of the Department of S&T, to develop the interactive digital map. From the India-wide map, users can zoom-in to a highly detailed map of Bangalore. A local geographical information systems (GIS) vendor, Spacial Data Inc, provided the updated map. Terraserver, a database of geographically indexed map and image data, forms the base. Users can search for landmarks, and the map will indicate the location of the landmark. They can also modify and add information (similar to Wikipedia) to the map, such as road names. "The community will be expected to police itself. We will allow citizens to upload information relevant to the city," said Mr Joseph M. Joy, Software Development Manager, Microsoft Research. The map is multi-lingual, and is available in three regional languages: Kannada, Tamil and Hindi. A soft-keyboard, which appears online, will help users input info in the language of their choice. Cartographers at MS worked with the Election Commission to include locations of polling booths.
