Agricultural Institutions Centre approves $50,000 for Global Crop Diversity Trust Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 13 THE Union Government has approved signing of an agreement for the establishment of Global Crop Diversity Trust by making one-time voluntary contribution of $50,000. The Union Cabinet, which met on Thursday under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, gave its nod for signing the agreement for the establishment of the Trust under International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). The treaty would ensure the continued availability of the plant genetic resources. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) adopted the ITPGRFA in 2001, but it came into force in 2004. The agreement has already been signed by the Governments of Cape Verde, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Jordan, Mali, Morocco, Samoa, Syria, Tonga and Togo and Sweden. The Cabinet also approved the signing of an agreement with the Philippines for cooperation in agriculture and related sectors. The agreement would ensure cooperation in rice production and processing, multiple cropping system, bio-organic farming, soil and water conservation, among others. The agreement will be valid for five years and renewed for a similar period.
